Piano Bar

A piano bar is a bar or lounge where a live pianist anchors the room and patrons often sing along together. It holds a special place in LGBTQ+ nightlife, sitting at the crossroads of queer community and musical theatre fandom. Marie's Crisis in New York's West Village is the best-known example: a basement space dating to the late 1800s that became an established gathering spot for the city's gay community by the early 1970s and still bills itself as a sing-along showtunes bar. Generations of queer people have bonded there over a shared vocabulary of Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Broadway. The tradition captures a durable strand of queer culture: performance, belonging, and the joy of singing in a room full of strangers.
