Pinched

Pinched is old slang for being arrested. It carried heavy weight in LGBTQ+ life through much of the 20th century, when police routinely raided gay bars and cruising spots and rounded up patrons. Getting pinched could mean far more than a night in jail: newspapers often printed the names of those arrested, so an arrest could cost people their jobs, their families, and their standing in the community. That constant threat shaped how queer people lived, encouraging coded language, discreet meeting places, and tight networks of mutual protection. Resentment over these raids helped fuel the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York, a turning point for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.
