Power lesbian is a colloquial, often celebratory term for a lesbian who is professionally successful, socially influential, and openly out in public life. It calls to mind women who lead in politics, business, media, sports, or the arts and who use that visibility on their own terms. The phrase gained traction in the 1990s and 2000s as more lesbians reached prominent positions and mainstream culture began to notice. It can carry a light, aspirational tone, and it doubles as recognition that visible, out lesbian leaders still matter in spaces where lesbian identity remains underrepresented at the top. Usage ranges from genuine admiration to playful shorthand among friends.
