Pride Month

Pride Month is celebrated internationally each June to honor LGBTQ+ people and mark the June 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City, which helped launch the modern movement for LGBTQ+ rights. Communities host parades, festivals, film screenings, panels, and memorials. In the United States, Presidents Clinton, Obama, and Biden issued official Pride Month proclamations. The month works as celebration, remembrance, and political statement at once. It has also become heavily commercialized, and many advocates push companies and organizers to move beyond marketing and support the community in concrete ways. Debate continues about corporate participation, safety, and keeping Pride connected to its activist roots.
