Questioning

Questioning describes a person who is in the process of exploring their sexual orientation, gender identity, or both, and has not settled on a fixed label. It is the 'Q' in many versions of the LGBTQ+ acronym, included to affirm that uncertainty and exploration are valid parts of understanding yourself, not stages to rush through. Questioning is a normal experience that can happen at any age. Organizations like the Human Rights Campaign and The Trevor Project describe it as an ongoing process rather than a problem to solve, and research points to how much affirming environments, supportive people, and access to resources help. The goal is space to figure things out without pressure to declare an identity before you are ready.
