Sissy, derived from 'sister,' began as a pejorative aimed at boys and men seen as effeminate or lacking conventional masculine traits, and it was long used to shame gay and gender-nonconforming people. Within LGBTQ+ communities the word carries more than one meaning today. Some reclaim it as a positive badge of femininity and gentleness, refusing the shame once attached to it.
