Sober

Sober means living without alcohol or other drugs, and within LGBTQ+ communities it names both a personal practice and a growing recovery-focused subculture.

Sober describes living without alcohol or other drugs. In LGBTQ+ contexts it points to both a personal choice and a growing subculture of recovery and support. Research finds that LGBTQ+ people experience substance use disorders at notably higher rates than the general population, a gap often linked to minority stress, discrimination, and the central role bars and clubs have long played in queer social life. In response, sober queer meetups, affirming recovery programs, dry parties, and advocacy groups have expanded, offering connection and community that does not center drinking. Being sober can be a health decision, a recovery milestone, or simply a lifestyle, and increasingly it is met with support rather than stigma.
