Soft Limits

Soft limits are activities in BDSM that a person is hesitant about but might be willing to try under the right conditions, with trust and careful negotiation.

In BDSM, soft limits are the activities someone is cautious or nervous about but might explore under specific conditions, such as with a deeply trusted partner, after building up to it, or in the right headspace. They sit between a hard limit, which is an absolute no that is never up for discussion, and something fully welcomed. Naming soft limits is a core part of the negotiation that partners do before a scene, and honoring them requires ongoing check-ins and attention to consent as play unfolds. Blurring the two kinds of limits is a common cause of harm, so many communities treat clear, honest boundary-setting as the foundation of safe, trusting play.
