Vegan / Hippie Lesbian

Vegan or hippie lesbian is a playful, affectionate archetype within lesbian culture describing a lesbian associated with plant-based eating, environmentalism, natural living, communal values, and social-justice activism. The stereotype has real roots in the separatist feminist communes and lesbian land movement of the 1960s and 1970s, when women formed intentional, often women-only rural communities, most famously in places like Southern Oregon, as part of the broader back-to-the-land movement. While the label is used with humor and self-recognition, it also points to a genuine tradition of queer women building community around care for the earth and alternatives to mainstream society. Like any stereotype, it describes a recognizable type, not every lesbian who happens to be vegan or environmentally minded.
