Village People, The

Village People are an American disco group formed in New York City in 1977 by French producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo with lead singer Victor Willis. The group was built to appeal to disco's large gay audience, dressing its members as archetypes of masculine fantasy including a construction worker, a police officer, a cowboy, a Native American, a soldier, and a leatherman. Their anthemic hits, especially "Y.M.C.A.," "Macho Man," "In the Navy," and "Go West," carried playful gay-coded lyrics that also crossed over into massive mainstream popularity. Decades later their songs remain fixtures at weddings, sports stadiums, and parties, embraced by audiences far beyond the LGBTQ+ community that first inspired them.
