Walk (Ballroom culture)

In ballroom culture, to walk is to compete in a category at a ball, presenting your look, energy, and command of that category before the judges and crowd.

In ballroom culture, a walk is the act of competing at a ball. To walk a category means to enter it and perform, whether the category is Face, Runway, a realness type like Executive or Butch Realness, or a voguing category. Participants, usually organized into houses that function as chosen families, are judged on how fully they embody the category through fashion, movement, attitude, and presence. Walking is the heart of the ball, where members earn trophies, cash, and reputation. The tradition grew from the Black and Latino LGBTQ+ ballroom community, which traces back to nineteenth century drag balls and took its modern house form in New York City.
