Function

In ballroom culture, a function is a ball or ballroom event where houses and performers compete across categories.

In ballroom culture, a function is a ball, the event itself where members gather to walk and compete. Ballroom is a Black and Latino LGBTQ+ subculture with roots in the drag balls of the 1800s and its modern house system taking shape in mid-20th-century cities as a refuge from racism in other queer spaces. At a function, chosen-family "houses" and individuals compete or "walk" in categories such as realness, vogue, and runway for trophies, cash, and reputation. Calling a ball a function signals fluency in the scene's language. The word carries the community's spirit of performance, mutual support, and belonging that ballroom has always centered.
