West Hollywood

West Hollywood, often called WeHo, is an independent city in Los Angeles County, California. It incorporated on November 6, 1984, driven by a coalition of LGBT activists, renters, and seniors, and elected the first city council in the nation with an openly gay and lesbian majority. The new city quickly adopted rent control, anti-discrimination measures, and one of the country's earliest domestic partnership ordinances, and its response to the AIDS crisis became a model for other cities. Santa Monica Boulevard anchors a well-known stretch of gay bars, clubs, and businesses sometimes called Boystown. WeHo remains a destination for LGBTQ+ travelers and a symbol of queer civic power.
