LGBT

LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. It grew out of the earlier initialism LGB, which in the mid-to-late 1980s replaced 'gay' as a catch-all that better acknowledged lesbians and bisexual people. The 'T' for transgender was added as the phrase came into common use in the 1990s. Placing lesbian first is often credited to the solidarity lesbians showed gay men during the AIDS crisis. The term keeps evolving as understanding broadens, expanding into forms like LGBTQ, LGBTQ+, and LGBTQIA+ to include queer, intersex, asexual, and other identities. Which version to use is still actively debated, with each addition reflecting an effort to name more of the community's real diversity.
