Alternative Lesbian

Alternative lesbian is an informal, descriptive term for a lesbian whose style and community ties run through alternative subcultures such as punk, goth, emo, indie, or DIY scenes. It reflects the reality that lesbian identity overlaps with many aesthetics and cultures that sit outside the mainstream. The word usually points to fashion, music taste, and social spaces, not a distinct sexual orientation, so it functions as a flavor of lesbian identity rather than a separate category. Many people who use it find community in underground music scenes, zine culture, and spaces that celebrate nonconformity. It is casual usage, not a term codified by LGBTQ+ organizations.
