Punk

Punk is a countercultural movement rooted in mid-1970s rock music, defined by a do-it-yourself ethos and a rejection of mainstream norms. Its embrace of outsiders made it a natural home for queer people, and many LGBTQ+ musicians shaped its history, from the Buzzcocks to Pansy Division to Against Me!. In 1980s Toronto, G.B. Jones and Bruce LaBruce launched the zine J.D.s, coining the idea of a radical queer punk movement that became known as queercore (originally homocore). Queercore fused punk's confrontational energy with gay liberation politics, partly as a response to homophobia the pair encountered in the hardcore scene. It grew through zines, bands, and films into a lasting queer subculture.
