Bear Community

The bear community is a subculture within gay and bisexual male culture that centers on larger, hairier, and often more conventionally masculine men, plus the people who admire them. It took shape in the 1980s, with San Francisco as a key hub, as a reaction against the youth-focused and often lean beauty standards of mainstream gay spaces. One early published use of "bear" for a gay man appears in George Mazzei's 1979 Advocate article "Who's Who in the Zoo?" The community built its own bars, clubs, events, and vocabulary. Related identities include cubs (younger bears), otters (leaner and hairy), wolves, and polar bears (silver-haired). Body positivity and belonging are recurring themes.
