Bear is a term for a gay or bisexual man who is typically larger-bodied, hairy, and often bearded, and who identifies with the bear subculture. The community took shape in the 1980s, with roots traced to San Francisco, as a reaction against the slim, smooth, youthful body ideals that dominated much of mainstream gay culture. It celebrates a wider range of bodies and a warm, laid-back sense of masculinity. The bear umbrella includes related labels such as cubs (younger or smaller bears), otters (leaner, hairy men), and muscle bears, and has widened over time to include trans and nonbinary members. Bears have their own flag, bars, and events, including Bear Week in Provincetown.
