Coming Out

Coming out, short for "coming out of the closet," is the process of recognizing your own sexual orientation or gender identity and choosing to share it with others. It is rarely a single moment. Because many people assume everyone is straight and cisgender, most LGBTQ+ people come out again and again across a lifetime, in new jobs, friendships, and family settings, and they decide each time who to tell and when. It can be freeing and can deepen relationships, but safety, timing, and readiness matter, and no one is obligated to come out before they are ready. Support organizations like HRC, PFLAG, and The Trevor Project offer guidance for the journey.
