Confirmatory Adoption

A confirmatory adoption is a court process, established by statute in a growing number of states, that confirms an existing legal parent's relationship to their child rather than establishing a brand new one. It is often used by married same-sex couples and other LGBTQ+ families where one partner is the biological or gestational parent and the other wants secure, portable proof of parentage. Because a birth certificate alone can be challenged when a family crosses state lines or faces a legal dispute, an adoption decree gives stronger protection recognized nationwide. Sometimes called second-parent or stepparent adoption depending on the state, confirmatory adoption is designed to be simpler and faster. Requirements and availability still vary widely by state.
