Fire Island Pines, often shortened to the Pines or FIP, is a beach community on a barrier island off Long Island, New York, that has drawn gay men as a summer destination since the 1950s and 1960s. Together with its older neighbor Cherry Grove, it forms one of the world's best known LGBTQ+ getaways. The two communities are separated by the Meat Rack, a wooded stretch long used as a cruising ground. The Pines is known for modernist beach houses, dance and circuit parties, and its role as a gathering place across generations of gay life. It holds a central place in American gay culture and history.
