Cruising Ground

A cruising ground is a specific locality, such as a park, beach, pier, public restroom, or stretch of road, where people walk or drive around in search of a casual sexual partner, usually anonymous and same-day. The practice, called cruising, has been part of queer life for centuries, documented in police and court records in England as far back as the early 1800s. When homosexuality was criminalized, cruising grounds gave gay and bisexual men a way to meet through coded glances and gestures in places hidden from public scrutiny. Cruising culture peaked in visibility in the 1970s and was reshaped by the AIDS crisis and, later, by dating apps. Some grounds remain active meeting spots today.
