Game Of Flats

Game of flats, also written "game at flats," is a historical English slang term for sexual activity between women. It circulated in 18th century England, appearing in bawdy verse of the period such as a poem titled "The Game at Flats," and predates the more clinical word "tribadism," which is first recorded in 1811. The phrase reflects an era when intimacy between women was rarely named plainly in print, so coded and playful expressions filled the gap. The term is largely archaic today, of interest mainly to historians of sexuality and lesbian history, but it survives as an early example of English vocabulary describing love and desire between women.
