Geek / Nerd

Geek and nerd are reclaimed labels of pride within LGBTQ+ communities for people who love gaming, sci-fi, fantasy, comics, and tech culture.

Geek and nerd began as insults for people seen as overly studious or obsessive about niche interests, but both have been widely reclaimed as labels of pride. Within LGBTQ+ communities they signal enthusiasm for gaming, science fiction, fantasy, comics, anime, and technology. Queer and geek cultures have long overlapped: science fiction and fantasy have offered space to imagine alternative identities, chosen families, and worlds beyond rigid norms, which resonates with many LGBTQ+ people. Conventions, fandoms, and online communities have become welcoming gathering spaces, and many beloved franchises now feature openly queer characters and creators. The two words are often used interchangeably, with geek leaning toward fandom and hobbies and nerd toward intellectual or technical passion.
