Glossary

Gender Neutral

Gender neutral describes language, spaces, clothing, or products that are not tied to or aimed at any particular gender.

Gender neutral describes language, spaces, clothing, products, or concepts that are not specific to a particular gender and can apply to anyone. Gender-neutral restrooms, also called all-gender or gender-inclusive restrooms, can be used by people of any gender. Gender-neutral language avoids assuming a person's gender, for example using the singular they, or words like firefighter and chairperson in place of gendered ones. The aim is to include everyone rather than default to a man-or-woman binary, which many workplaces, schools, and institutions have adopted as standard practice. Related terms include all-gender, gender-inclusive, and unisex. Gender neutral describes the language or space itself and is different from a personal gender identity such as agender or nonbinary.
