Green Hanky

In the handkerchief code, a color-coded flagging system that spread among gay men in the 1970s, green signals an interest in hustling or paid sex. As with other colors, the side matters: worn on the left it points to the hustler or escort role, and worn on the right it points to the client or paying role, following the code's general left-active, right-passive pattern. The hanky code let men communicate specific interests without speaking, useful in an era when being openly gay carried real risk. Meanings were never fully standardized and shifted by city and scene, so the code was always read alongside local knowledge rather than as a fixed dictionary.
