LGBTQIA; GSM; DSG
GSM (Gender and Sexual Minorities) and DSG (Diverse Sexualities and Genders) are umbrella terms sometimes used in place of letter-based acronyms like LGBTQIA.
GSM and DSG are alternative umbrella terms for the same community that acronyms like LGBTQIA describe. GSM stands for Gender and Sexual Minorities, and DSG stands for Diverse Sexualities and Genders. Both aim to name the shared experience of falling outside majority norms rather than listing specific identities, which supporters say avoids leaving anyone out as new letters are added. A closely related term, SGM (Sexual and Gender Minorities), is used by the U.S. National Institutes of Health in research and clinical settings. These formulations appear most often in academic, medical, and international contexts. Each has critics too, since "minority" framing can feel clinical and some prefer the identity-affirming letters of LGBTQ.
