Masc (Men)

Short for "masculine," describing gay, bisexual, or queer men who present in conventionally masculine ways.

"Masc," short for masculine, describes gay, bisexual, or queer men who present in conventionally masculine ways through dress, voice, and mannerism. Within gay culture it can be a plain descriptor, but it also carries weight, especially on dating apps where profiles reading "masc only" have been criticized for enforcing narrow ideas of masculinity and sidelining femme or gender-nonconforming men. The value placed on "masc" in queer spaces often reflects wider cultural anxieties about effeminacy and visibility. Many writers connect the preference to femmephobia and internalized homophobia, while others treat it simply as a description of how someone looks or acts.
