Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (b. 1940)

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (October 25, 1946 to October 13, 2025) was an American author, activist, and community organizer for transgender rights. Born in Chicago and assigned male at birth, she was present at the 1969 Stonewall uprising and spent more than fifty years organizing for transgender liberation, with a lasting focus on trans women of color and people who are incarcerated. She survived criminalization, incarceration, and the AIDS crisis, and served as the first executive director of the Transgender Gender Variant Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) in San Francisco. Her life is the subject of the 2015 documentary MAJOR!, and her memoir, Miss Major Speaks, was published in 2023. She later settled in Little Rock, Arkansas, to support Black trans women there.
