Mopping
In ballroom and drag culture, mopping means stealing or shoplifting, often to obtain the clothing and materials needed to compete at a ball.
Mopping is slang from Black and Latino LGBTQ+ ballroom culture for stealing, especially shoplifting clothing or lifting food and goods. The word is documented in the 1990 film Paris Is Burning, where ballroom figures describe mopping as a way to acquire the expensive outfits and fabrics that competing in balls required, at a time when many participants faced poverty and few legitimate resources. In that context it was framed less as simple theft than as survival and self-invention within a community that prized glamour and presentation. The term reflects the economic realities behind ball culture, where the labor and cost of looking flawless often outpaced what performers could afford.
