National LGBTQ Task Force, The

The National LGBTQ Task Force is an American social justice advocacy nonprofit founded in 1973 as the National Gay Task Force, later the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. It was the first national organization dedicated to the civil rights of gay and lesbian people, and its early work helped push the American Psychiatric Association to stop classifying homosexuality as a mental disorder. Often called simply the Task Force, it advances a progressive vision of liberation that connects LGBTQ+ equality with racial, economic, and other justice movements. Since 1988 it has organized Creating Change, the largest annual conference for LGBTQ+ movement activists in the country.
