Out

To be out is to be openly public about one's LGBTQ+ identity rather than keeping it hidden.

Being out means being openly public about one's LGBTQ+ identity instead of concealing it. Coming out is usually a process rather than a single moment, and people are often out in some parts of life while remaining private in others, for example open with friends and online but not at work or with certain family. Being out can bring real relief and community, and research generally links openness to better mental health when a person is in a supportive environment. It also carries risk, since people who are out in unsupportive settings may face rejection, discrimination, or harm. Whether, when, and to whom someone comes out is a personal choice that belongs to them alone.
