Philadelphia (Movie)

Philadelphia is a 1993 American drama directed by Jonathan Demme, with Tom Hanks as Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer pushed out of his firm after his employers learn he has AIDS. Beckett hires a homophobic personal injury attorney, played by Denzel Washington, to sue for wrongful termination. Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film was among the first big-budget Hollywood movies to treat a gay man with AIDS sympathetically and to center his dignity at a time of intense stigma. It is widely credited with softening public attitudes toward people living with HIV. Bruce Springsteen's theme song "Streets of Philadelphia" also won an Oscar.
