Pink Mafia

Pink mafia is a loaded phrase suggesting that gay people wield hidden, outsized power inside a given industry or institution, often entertainment, fashion, media, or, in some accounts, political circles. Inside the community it is frequently used as camp humor about gay solidarity and looking out for one another. In hostile hands it works very differently: it echoes older conspiracy tropes that frame LGBTQ+ visibility as a secret agenda rather than earned representation. Journalists have applied it, for example, to networks of closeted gay Republican operatives whose private lives clashed with their public anti-gay politics. Because the same two words can be a friendly joke or a slur, tone and speaker matter a great deal.
