Protective Attraction

Protective attraction describes wanting to care for, shield, or look after another person. It comes out of the wider idea, common in asexual, aromantic, and broader queer communities, that attraction is not one single thing but several strands that can point in different directions. People split attraction into romantic, sexual, platonic, sensual, aesthetic, and alterous forms, and some add a protective strand to name a caretaking pull that is not automatically romantic or sexual. The label is mostly community-coined rather than clinical, and it shows up in conversations about relationship dynamics, including care-centered kink roles. Using it helps some people describe feelings that the usual categories miss.
