Self-Hating Gay

"Self-hating gay" is a colloquial term for an LGB person who carries deep shame or internalized homophobia toward their own sexual orientation.

"Self-hating gay" is an informal, often loaded phrase for a lesbian, gay, or bisexual person who feels intense shame, discomfort, or hostility toward their own orientation. Psychologists describe the underlying dynamic as internalized homophobia: the process of absorbing society's anti-gay bias and turning it inward. It can show up as self-disgust, anxiety, secrecy, distancing from other LGBTQ+ people, or in some cases publicly anti-gay behavior. Researchers frame it as part of minority stress, the chronic strain of living under stigma, and note that it often surfaces during the years someone is coming to terms with their identity. Affirming relationships, community, visibility, and therapy are widely cited as key to easing internalized shame. The term is best used with care, since it can be used as an insult.
