Spectrum

In LGBTQ+ contexts, spectrum refers to the idea that identity, attraction, and expression exist along a continuous range rather than in a handful of rigid boxes. The framing recognizes that people can fall anywhere between poles, that experiences can shift over time, and that many identities live in the space between traditional labels. An early influence was Alfred Kinsey's 1948 scale, which placed sexual orientation on a continuum from exclusively heterosexual to exclusively homosexual and suggested most people land somewhere in between. Today the spectrum idea underlies how people talk about bisexuality, pansexuality, nonbinary gender, and the asexual and aromantic spectrums, offering language for experiences that fixed categories tend to erase.
