The L Word

The L Word was a Showtime drama series (2004 to 2009) following a group of lesbian and bisexual women in Los Angeles, notable as the first ensemble series centered on queer women.

The L Word was an American-Canadian television drama that aired on Showtime from January 2004 to March 2009. Set in Los Angeles, it followed a circle of lesbian and bisexual women through their relationships, careers, and community. It was the first television series to feature an ensemble cast of queer female characters, and its frank portrayal of lesbian life was groundbreaking. The show was praised for its visibility while also criticized for limited racial and body diversity. It spawned a reality spin-off, The Real L Word, and a sequel series, The L Word: Generation Q, which ran on Showtime from 2019 to 2023 with a more diverse cast. It remains a lasting cultural touchstone for queer women.
