The Women's Building

The Women's Building is a feminist community center in San Francisco's Mission District that has served as a hub for women's and LGBTQ+ organizing, arts, and mutual aid for decades. It grew out of the San Francisco Women's Centers, founded in 1971, and moved into its current home on 18th Street in 1979, making it one of the country's first women-owned and women-operated community centers. It provides meeting and event space to community groups and offers services that reach queer women, lesbians, and transgender people. Its exterior is covered by Maestrapeace, a celebrated feminist mural painted in 1994 by a group of Bay Area muralists.
