Trans Athlete

A trans athlete is a transgender person who takes part in competitive sports. Their participation has become a heavily politicized topic, especially around whether trans women should compete in women's categories. In 2021 the International Olympic Committee released a framework urging sports bodies to write policies that are sport-specific, evidence-based, and rights-respecting rather than applying blanket bans. Governing bodies differ widely, and the research is still contested, though many advocates and researchers note that claims of a broad competitive advantage lack strong scientific support once factors like hormone therapy are accounted for. Supporters emphasize that sport offers physical, social, and mental health benefits that trans youth and adults deserve access to.
