Asexuality is a sexual orientation marked by little or no sexual attraction to others, or a low or absent interest in sexual activity. It is not the same as celibacy, which is a chosen behavior, and it is not a medical problem or a hormone issue. Asexual people, often called aces, can and do form deep emotional, romantic, and intimate bonds, and some choose to have sex for reasons like pleasing a partner or having children. Asexuality is a spectrum that includes related identities such as demisexual and graysexual. It became far more visible in the early 2000s through online organizing, especially the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN).
