Blue Jeans Lesbian

A blue jeans lesbian is a woman who identifies as femme but prefers casual, comfortable clothing like jeans and t-shirts over dresses and skirts.

Blue jeans lesbian, also called blue jean femme, describes a lesbian who identifies as femme or feminine but leans toward casual, comfortable clothing like jeans, t-shirts, and boots rather than dresses and skirts. It names a middle ground: not butch, but not high femme either. The label surfaced in lesbian community writing around the late 1990s and is used descriptively and affectionately to capture a low-maintenance, everyday version of femininity. Some sources treat it as roughly interchangeable with "low femme." Like most identity labels within lesbian culture, it is self-applied and flexible, more a shorthand for personal style than a fixed category.
