Butch Queen

Butch queen is a term from ballroom culture, the Black and Latino LGBTQ+ scene built around competitive balls. It refers to a gay or bisexual man who was assigned male at birth and lives as a man, and it covers a wide range of expression from very masculine to soft or feminine. In this world it does not mean "a masculine gay man" specifically. Instead it is a broad category that sits alongside terms like femme queen (trans women or transfeminine people in ballroom) and butch (masculine women or transmasculine people). Butch queens compete across many categories, from realness to runway to vogue, and are central to the ballroom community and its language.
