Cher is an American singer and actress whose career spans more than six decades, from her 1960s duo with Sonny Bono to solo hits, an Academy Award for Moonstruck, and a 1998 comeback with "Believe." She is one of the most durable pop figures alive and a beloved gay icon, admired for her camp sensibility, dramatic reinventions, and refusal to fade. Cher has long supported LGBTQ+ rights and HIV/AIDS causes. Her child Chaz Bono came out as a lesbian, later served as an executive at GLAAD, and after transitioning became a visible transgender advocate. Cher's public support for Chaz deepened her bond with queer audiences who see their own resilience reflected in her.
