Dance Major

"Dance major" is playful queer slang used as a coded, knowing way to hint that a man is gay without saying so outright.

"Dance major" is playful queer slang used as a gentle, coded hint that someone, usually a man, is gay. Saying "oh, he was a dance major" winks at the stereotype that certain interests or vibes track with gay culture, letting people signal a read without stating it plainly. It belongs to a long tradition of coded language queer people have used to identify one another safely or humorously, alongside phrases like "family" or "friend of Dorothy." The tone is usually affectionate and in-group rather than mocking. Like any stereotype-based shorthand, it is a joke about patterns, not a reliable indicator, and plenty of dancers are straight while plenty of gay men never took a class.
