Dark Room

A dark room is a deliberately darkened area found in some gay bars, sex clubs, and bathhouses, set aside for anonymous or semi-anonymous sexual encounters. The low light lowers inhibitions and removes the emphasis on appearance, letting people connect by touch and proximity rather than by being seen. Dark rooms are part of a long tradition of queer sexual spaces that grew up when public same-sex intimacy was criminalized and had to stay hidden. Each venue sets its own rules and etiquette around consent, condoms, and behavior, and staff typically monitor the space. The term is used mostly in gay male nightlife, though similar spaces exist in other queer and kink settings.
