Grand Marshal

A Grand Marshal is an honored figure selected to lead a Pride parade, a role borrowed from the broader parade tradition and given special meaning in LGBTQ+ celebrations. Pride organizers, often through community nomination, choose Grand Marshals to recognize activism, leadership, artistry, or lasting impact on queer life. Many Prides name more than one, using categories such as community, celebrity, and legacy or icon Grand Marshals, and they sometimes honor figures posthumously. Recent examples include activists, journalists, performers, and organizations. Being named Grand Marshal is one of the highest honors a Pride can offer, placing the recipient at the front of the march as a symbol of the year's theme and the community's ongoing fight for equality.
