House Mother

In ballroom culture, the Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ scene that grew out of Harlem's drag balls, a House is a chosen family and a House Mother is its matriarch. The role dates to figures like Crystal LaBeija, who founded the House of LaBeija and set the pattern of a "mother" guiding younger performers. A House Mother mentors her "children," offering emotional support, practical help, competition coaching, and often housing to young people who have been rejected by their birth families. Many House Mothers are legendary community elders. The role can be held by a range of people, including trans women and gay men, and it centers care, protection, and belonging rather than any single gender presentation.
