In gay male slang, "jock" describes a man with an athletic, muscular build and a masculine presentation, usually linked to sports, the gym, and fitted athletic wear. The word comes from mainstream American usage for a serious athlete. Within queer communities it works as a recognizable type and attraction category, and it appears as a self-selected label on apps like Grindr and Scruff alongside terms such as bear, otter, and twink. Jock is also counted among the sub-identities within bear culture. As with most of these labels, it points to a look and energy rather than any fixed rule about body type or personality.
