Lambda Legal

Lambda Legal, formally the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, is the oldest and largest national legal organization in the United States working for the full civil rights of LGBTQ+ people and everyone living with HIV. It was founded in 1973 by a group of lawyers and was the first gay rights organization to be granted tax-exempt status. Lambda Legal works through impact litigation, public education, and policy advocacy. It has played a role in landmark victories including Romer v. Evans (1996), Lawrence v. Texas (2003), which struck down remaining sodomy laws, and the broader push for marriage equality. Its work spans employment, healthcare, family, and transgender rights across the country.
